The Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Program is excited to share the Forest Service’s first Urban FIA dataset for Portland, OR and the updated San Diego, CA dataset (now including the 2018 inventory) with you through the interactive My City’s Trees application.

My City’s Trees is an application that enables anyone to access Urban Forest Inventory and Analysis data through interactive visualizations and summaries categorized by several themes. Pre-built and custom summary reports can be generated within each theme for the city of interest. These summaries describe species-specific counts of trees, carbon storage and sequestration, associated energy savings, runoff and pollution prevention, and more!

Portland, OR data are available from the 2018 field season where, in partnership with the City of Portland, Parks & Recreation Urban Forestry Division, Urban FIA crews completed a full survey of 189 plots representing 87,310 acres of land. Portland themes include land cover, zoning, equity (uses race and income to determine census tracts where marginalized communities reside), neighborhood coalitions, and urban heat island.

San Diego, CA Urban FIA data have been updated to now include the 2017 and 2018 field surveys. This work was completed in partnership with the City of San Diego, and themes include land cover, watersheds, pollution burden, climate designations, and residential annual income.

Analysts and scientists with the US Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program, including the iTree team, and cooperators with the City of Portland, Parks & Recreation Urban Forestry Division, the City of San Diego, and the University of New Hampshire are preparing comprehensive publications summarizing the results of our data collection efforts in Portland and San Diego. These reports will complement what can be found in the My City’s Trees interactive tool. Meanwhile, our field crews are preparing to safely continue to revisit a subset of Portland and San Diego urban plots in 2021 as a key feature of Urban FIA is remeasurement of plots to monitor trends over time.

Urban FIA data collected on plots throughout Portland and San Diego (and other select cities nationwide) are available through the FIA Urban DataMart: https://apps.fs.usda.gov/fia/datamart/images/urbandatamart.html
