About UFEI

Welcome to the Urban Forest Ecosystems Institute.

The Urban Forest Ecosystems Institute (UFEI) at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, was established to meet the growing demand for more effective urban forest management across California.

UFEI’s mission is to conduct applied research and provide community service and outreach programs that support communities, public agencies, nonprofits, and industry in sustainably managing urban forests. Research findings and resources are freely available to the public at ufei.calpoly.edu.

Drawing on expertise from Biology, Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences, Computer Science, Geography, Fire Science, and other disciplines, the Institute addresses the most pressing challenges in urban forestry through a collaborative, cross-disciplinary approach.

The Institute operates across the full spectrum of urban forest settings — from dense inner-city landscapes to remote semi-developed areas — and works in partnership with other universities, government agencies, and private consulting firms to maximize its impact.
