Description of Pest/Symptoms

The California fivespined ips kills saplings, pole sized trees, young trees up to 26 inches in diameter and the tops of even larger trees. It often breeds in slash and recently downed material and spreads from there to live trees. The egg galleries have 3-5 nearly straight tunnels usually in an inverted y pattern. The galleries are full of debris. The larval mines are always visible on the outer wood after peeling the bark.
