Phytophthora ramorum
Sudden Oak Death

Description of Disease

Phytophthora ramorum causes two types of symptoms on affected plants. In some it causes bleeding cankers on the mainstem with red-brown exudate. Zone lines are present around diseased tissue when bark is examined. If the tree is killed by the canker, the leaves suddenly turn brown and remain attached to the tree. Mortality. On other hosts the disease affects the leaves and branch tips. Necrotic leaf tips or leaf spots and twig dieback may occur. The leaf spots generally form where water collects and remains for extended periods on the leaves.
